Wet & Wild

This time last Thursday, we were on our way to OH! Canada for a little trip to visit Niagara Falls.  Since none of us had ever seen the falls in person, we were all quite excited.  Our plan was to arrive around 11:30 Thursday night.  We actually arrived at the border closer to 12:30 Friday morning and then patiently waited in the customs line for ALMOST.  TWO.  HOURS.

Really?!?  There are that many people that need to be crossing the border into Canada in the middle of the night?  Who knew?

Our view from the hotel made that wait {almost} worthwhile.

The little bit we saw of Canada was beautiful.  And expensive.  And friendly.  And expensive.  And clean.  Did I mention expensive?

And I'm thoroughly convinced they think it's hilarious to soak their guests.  Every thing we did {okay, maybe not everything} was preceded by the handing out of a rain poncho.  We all ended up with three different ponchos.  Quite comical.

AFTER THE MAID OF THE TROPICAL STORM:

Poncho Cutie:

We also ventured a bit further north to Niagara on the Lake.  It was this adorable little town with quaint shops, including this yummy Irish Pub where we had dinner and about 15 ice cream places to choose from.  Do not be distracted by the claw my hand in this shot.  Don't know what that's about?

Overall the trip was fun.  It was a wet whirlwind and we were exhausted, but now we can all say we've seen the falls.  Been there.  Done that.

thankful thursday

Today, I am thankful for my sister, Megan.

She is a wonderful wife to Jim, who doesn't realize how good he has it.

She is an amazing mom to Abby, Chris, & Alex.

She is a terrific sister to me, Jill, & Michael.

We have tons of fun when we're together.
I don't know why I ever washed her hair with Vaseline
or threw shampoo bottles at her
or thought she was annoying.

Megan likes to have a good time....

And although she's probably going to kill me for these,
apparently, she likes to dress up....

a lot.

Happy Birthday Megan!
I love you lots! :)

Party on, dude :)

P.S. No revenge postings allowed ~ hahaha!

some words about wordless wednesday

I am thrilled to announce the birth of another niece...
[hey, if I can't have little girls, at least I can have 3 nieces to love on...]

Logan Carroll was born July 3rd, weighing in at 7 lbs 5 oz and measuring 19 1/4 in.

My sister, Jill, and her hubby, Brian, are the proud parents who feel extremely blessed with the birth of this little miracle. She is absolutely beautiful with a crop of thick, dark hair on her little head...so precious!

Big sister, Ava, is smitten...

Evan, Nathan, and I got to meet baby Logan on July 4th and the boys just couldn't wait to hold her and couldn't stop giving her kisses. Ryan and Mark have yet to have the pleasure of meeting their new cousin/niece, but hopefully tomorrow will be the day.

ahhhh.....vacation

Last week was spent with my whole family on our annual week-long beach vacation. It was not the usual Memorial Day week in the Outer Banks due to a number of reasons:

~pregnant sister

~2 teachers

~1 OT working in a school district

~2 people w/new jobs [read:not a lot of vacation time]

~2 kiddos in school fulltime

SO, we decided to keep it a little closer to home this year and rented a house in Ocean City, NJ. We were within 1 1/2 blocks of the beach and walking distance from the boardwalk amusement rides. The house was great ~ a little smaller than we're used to for so many people, but it worked out. The beach was gorgeous and the water was perfect! Many days we were some of the last people off the beach after 7 p.m.

The kids had a blast. Evan spent the entire vacation boogie boarding. Ryan was quite brave in the waves this year....going in up to his armpits and jumping the waves as they rolled in. Nathan had little to no fear either and split his time between water and sand. Needless to say, it was not a very restful, relaxing vacation for mom and dad. [Especially since Ryan had a knack for waking the entire house up around 6 a.m. EVERY day ~ I don't know where that kid gets his energy!]

A good time was had by all. Time spent together as family is never wasted. The kids enjoyed their cousins and the morning walks for donuts and the rides on the boardwalk and the evening walks for ice cream. Who am I kidding?!? The 'big' kids enjoyed it all, too! :)

Here are a few of my favorite pics from the week:

3D

Last weekend, we took the boys to see Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D to celebrate my birthday. :)

Toy Story 2 is one of my absolute favorite animated movies ~ TS1 is good, too, but I prefer TS2. The boys love watching them at home, so I thought this would be a fun Saturday afternoon family activity.

This was Nathan's first theater movie and he did great. Didn't always keep the 3D glasses on, but that was o.k. He didn't seem to mind watching without them.

Now, my boys ALL have BIG heads, but these 3D glasses were humongous on them....

Did they not think that little kids might be coming to see this movie?

We came.
We saw.
We sported the Roy Orbison glasses.
We ate 2 tubs of popcorn.
We survived....

and only Nathan threw up at the end of the night....

All in all, it was a great success :)

Encouraged

Grief is a funny thing.

It resides just below the surface of your emotions most days and then it sneaks up on you when you least expect it. This happened to me on Wednesday evening at McDonald's of all places.

It was one of those nights.
Mark wasn't going to be home for dinner.
I had a meeting after work.
I didn't get the kids picked up from the sitter's until after 5:00.
Dinner was an afterthought, so I decided to take the boys to MickeyD's.

Of course it was crowded at the dinner hour.
Of course we had to wait for our order.
Of course Ryan spilled the ketchup all over the table and seat before we even got our food.
Of course Ryan had a fit when he decided he didn't have enough nuggets.
Of course everyone had to go to the bathroom.

Some of them twice.

In the midst of all this chaos, grief kept rearing its sneaky self at me in several different ways.

First, the only table in the entire restaurant that was available for us to sit and eat was the exact same table that we had sat in the last time we ate inside.
When Mark was away for work.
And my grandmom and pop-pop treated us to dinner.

Next, there was an older gentleman sitting at the table caddy-corner to ours with his grandson.
He wore a hat on his head just like my pop-pop used to: sitting up on top making you want to grab it and push it down. :)

This same gentleman turned himself around in his seat to face me as he was getting ready to leave and looking at my boys, said,
"I give you a lot of credit."
and "I don't know how you do it."

These were both exact word for word things that my pop-pop used to say to me every time I saw him. The only obvious omission was "hon" at the end of the sentence.

I wanted to give this strange sweet man a hug.

It was always such an encouragement when my pop-pop recognized how difficult the job of mom could be sometimes. And not only that he recognized it, but told me he noticed and that he was praying for me.

So, yeah, I sat there in the restaurant and tried to eat my french fries and chicken sandwich through my tears as I remembered my pop-pop.

Later that evening, when I was getting the kids' clothes ready for the next day, I was searching through Evan's sock drawer and of all things, found an M1 grand shell from the day of my pop-pop's funeral [he'd been given a 21 gun salute and my grandmom gave each of my boys a shell to remember].

Why was this keepsake stashed in Evan's sock drawer?
Why did this stranger speak the very same words my pop-pop spoke to me?
Why was the only available table the same one we had sat in together?

I don't know.
But I do know that I needed encouragement and God provided it.

Pop-Pop the Great

Ten days ago tomorrow that my mom called us at 12:15 am to tell us to pray for my pop-pop ~ that he had collapsed and the ambulance was on the way to my grandparents' house. Unfortunately, my pop-pop passed away that morning from a heart attack.

He was 84 years old.

When I tell people that this happened, I feel the need to explain a little about the relationship we had with this special man. I think people who didn't know him think he was one of those grandfathers who we saw but once a year at the holidays. That he must have been sickly since he was so old. That he must not have known his grandchildren and great-grandchildren very well.
That couldn't be farther from the truth.

My pop-pop was the healthiest, most active, energetic 84 year old you'd ever see.

He took care of my grandmom, their home, their pool, and their 1 acre property faithfully.

He volunteered his time and talents with Bible school, the Veteran's Museum, the Veteran's Association, and the Republican Party.

He attended every family birthday party and gathering for all 3 of his children and their spouses, all 8 of his grandchildren and their spouses, and all 10 of his great-grandchildren.

He played and swam with my boys, and ran circles around me.

My boys called him pop-pop the great, or pop-pop with the pool :)
We saw him a few times a month.

He was cutting up a fallen tree in his backyard the Wednesday before he died.

I miss him terribly.

We had his viewing and memorial service last Thursday and I had the privilege of reading Psalm 91 ~ one of his favorite passages....the one his mother wrote to him when he was in WWII. And then, there was an opportunity to share memories and I wrote this:

"As I've reflected on my pop-pop's life and legacy this past week, I've thought a lot about how he lived his life. And I believe, that above all, he lived intentionally.

He granted my grandmom's every wish with the intention of serving his wife.

He volunteered to help with Bible school each year with the intention of serving God and perhaps mentoring some of the young people who volunteered to help.

He enlisted in the US Marine Corp with the intention of defending the cause of freedom for future generations.

He volunteered at the Veteran's Museum with the intention of upholding the memory of the cost of our freedom.

He gave of his time, energy, and money with the intention of helping others.

He played with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with the intention of having fun and building relationships.

He imparted his love for cars and trains with the intention of sharing his interests.

He was an original scrapbooker with the intention of keeping memories alive for future family members to know and learn and understand their rich heritage.

He asked questions and genuinely listened to the answers with the intention of putting others first.

He attended every family event and gathering with the intention of conveying the importance and value of family.

He encouraged, supported, and rooted for each one of us with the intention of building us up.

He prayed with the intention of giving God control of his life and the lives of those he lifted in prayer.

He loved and served the Lord through his actions and interactions with everyone he met with the intention of glorifying God.

My pop-pop lived intentionally and he will be missed tremendously. I know he's in the Lord's presence and someday we'll see him again. I can almost see him ducking his head down and saying what he always said when we left his house ~ "Bye, now."

In other words, see you soon.

I look forward to the day we meet again in heaven and I hear his sweet voice say, "Hey, Amy~how're you doing, hon?"

In the meantime, I hope I can honor his life and his memory by choosing to live intentionally myself. I love you, pop-pop. I pray that you knew just how much."

The service concluded with a 21 gun salute on the front lawn of the church. And wouldn't you know, even though it had been pouring rain, it stopped and the sun came out for that. He would have been so proud.

On Friday, my pop-pop was buried with honor at the Indiantown Gap Veteran's Cemetary.

I still can't believe he's gone.

Magical...

This used to be my sister, Jill's, favorite word.

Everything was or had to be magical.
Her trips,
her parties,
her graduations,
her wedding,
her house.
I love that Jill thinks like this.
It's what makes her Jill. :)

She and her hubby, Brian, are in the process of making
their yard magical. Brian trash-picked a sliding board
and installed it into the side of the hill in their backyard.

And as if that wasn't magical enough, they put little steps
up the one side with bricks and flowering plants around it.

Isn't that the most magical thing for a 2 1/2 year old?

Nathan & Ava had a blast playing on this Saturday night...

Will YOU take the Challenge?

Take a look at your photo albums and if you are a scrapbooker,
your scrapbooks.

How many pictures of yourself can you find?
If you're like me, you can probably count them fairly
quickly because there just aren't that many.

Why is that? Well, for me, there are a few reasons.

1. I'm usually the one taking the pictures.

2. I'm the one who uploads them to Snapfish, chooses the shots
I like and order prints. Pictures of me typically don't make the
cut. Dark circles under my eyes is probably number one reason
why, followed by unflattering pose [read:muffin top], unflattering
angle, or that in my mind, It's just not good enough.

However, I have been making a concerted effort to have more photos
taken of myself, not only "Just Me" but also with my hubby and my
kids. Even if that means I have to do the old "hold the camera out as
far as my arm will reach and take my own picture" technique :)
My friend, Emilie, recently set up a challenge on her blog through
flicker. The challenge is to make a greater effort to get in photos with
your kids ~ no matter what you're wearing, how much cover-up you
need, or how much weight you think you need to lose. The point is
that your kids don't notice and will not care in the future about those
things. What they will notice is that you loved them and what better
way to capture that than with a photo?

Here are some of my recent attempts...

YES....The Beach

Yes, we went to the beach for the day on Sunday.

Yes, it is only the end of April and we were all in our bathing suits.

Yes, we all got some sun.

Yes, it was a record-breaking 93 degrees in the city.

Yes, it was 10-15 degrees cooler on the beach.

Yes, the boys went surf-fishing with Daddy.

Yes, we played Yahtzee in the sand.

Yes, the boys built sandcastles with Pop-Pop.

Yes, it was well-worth the $70 spent {gas, bait, & pizza for dinner}.

Yes, it was a relaxing, fun, family day at the shore in April.
{I had to add that again because I can't believe it myself :)}
